History of St. Helena's Church
On
March 6, 1959 the Rt. Rev Gerald Francis Burrill, Episcopal Bishop of
Chicago, ordered a mission in Pleasantdale. The Rev. Curtis A. Waltemade
was our first vicar and lived in the vicarage.
Groundbreaking for the new church was on September 27, 1964. The
cornerstone was laid, inscribed: "The tabernacle of God is with
men."
The contractor, Paul Dressler, built the church with loving
care. It was designed by W. Lindsey Suter with a bell tower and glorious
east window. The interior of brick and fir (each board smooth and perfect)
was beautifully designed with a traditional nave (upside down ship).
The first service in the church was on Rogation Sunday, May 23,
1965. Prior to the service the members processed from their
temporary location at Pleasantdale School to the new church. The Alter, pipe organ and sanctuary furniture were consecrated
on September 12th.
