Study the Bible from start to finish with us at Barbara’s Bookstore, Burr Ridge
Read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation as a seamless narrative with members of St. Helena's Episcopal Church on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Barbara’s Bookstore, Burr Ridge, beginning fall sessions on Sep. 6.
Everyone regardless of religious affiliation (or lack thereof) is welcome to join the group in reading from The Story (Zondervan, 2008), an edited, novel-length version of the Bible drawing from Today’s New International Version or other pertinent biblical texts.
“We are reading the Bible because it is a great story set in an amazing historical context,” said Daryce Hoff Nolan, St. Helena's Pastoral Associate, who will facilitate the group. “The Bible is also a great record of faith, but we will not be using it to proselytize or lecture people about what they should believe or insisting that our interpretation is the only one.”
“We are more interested in how the stories of the Bible speak differently to different people in a group than in coming up with any kind of definitive answer to what each part of the story means.”
Historical context for reading the Bible will be provided from time to time by the Rev. Dr. Robert Wyatt, pastor of St. Helena's.
“I enjoy discussing what we know about the world of the Bible and, more importantly, talking about what we don’t know as we attempt to understand the Bible’s meaning,” Wyatt said. “But this is not a history lesson or a catechism. It is a chance to read a magnificent work of literature in historical context and from varied perspectives.”
Barbara’s Bookstore is located at 810 Village Center Drive, Burr Ridge, IL 60527; phone (630) 920-1500.
